District 36 club in New York

Victor Calderone moves his residency to the new club District 36

District 36 club in New YorkAmateurs of electronic dance music can rejoice: in addition to the arrival of club Sankey’s coming up in Spring 2011, a new venue catering to the house and techno music crowd is set to open on October 9, with none other than the legendary UK jock Sasha headlining the opening party. The club called District 36 is located in a former warehouse on 36th street between 5th and 6th and its musical director is the guy behind the Blkmarket Membership promotion crew which organizes various techno events across the city.

The party line-up promises to feature refined techno sounds and underground DJ’s on Fridays while the Saturday spot will be reserved to big name electronic dance music artists, such as New York veteran Victor Calderone who is moving his massively successful Evolve party from Pacha.

One of the most hyped feature of the new venue is its state of the art sound system, custom built by GSA studio who also did the sound for many high profile night clubs such as London’s Ministry of sound. District 36 is being touted as a music driven venue, which has the potential to bring a significant impact on New York’s underground dance music scene similar to that of legendary defunct spots like Arc or Twilo. It’s worth remembering that Sasha used to be a resident DJ at Twilo, and his return on the opening night of District 36 after a prolonged absence may be a sign of great things to come.

Gay boys will definitely be in attendance when Victor spins there, thanks to his loyal following that dates back from his early days spinning at The Roxy. It remains to be seen whether the venue will remain true to his initial credo, and not go the way of M2 or Amnesia who quickly sold out to the highly profitable bottle service crowd.

    A few friends have given me the scoop on this place and from what I can see and hear,its getting alot of hype for it not to be open yet.I tried to dig up as much info on this place as I could.What I found is that they want to bring back the days of Twilo.Thats thats gonna be pretty hard to do since it is not serving our underserved Gay electronic dance music community.I am noting that many New York City nightclubs have served us and were successful throughout their years of operation (ROXY,TWILO,TUNNEL,STEREO,just to name a few).We have truly been underserved and usually ignored by these “mainstream” nightclubs for the past 3 years and it has .New York City’s gay community has alot of House Music/Techno lovers (I am one of them) and we have been in search and waiting for a new home to serve it up.They seem to NOT get that.It seems that gays are the easiest demographic to ignore in New York nightlife,while making up lame excuses as to why they wont serve our crowd.They’ll open their doors to the ghetto trashy hiphop crowd long before they bother with “teh gayz” .That being said From what Im grabbing of this place it looks that they will mainly cater to their brooklyn revelers (blk market) and the usual bridge and tunnel breeder crowd that has butchered Pacha. It does indeed sound like another boring club serving the same boring crowd. I may not visit this club but probably 1 time.

    The very fact that lame-tastic “Club 57″ is the best gay party in New York right now speaks volumes and not very good ones at that.It quite embarassing that our gay visitors have to bother with str8 nightlife in order to hear good House Music.Since the Fags behind gay nightlife just throw mediocre Top 40 music at us at every place we go.Quite sad and is the main reason why I only come out for dancing during Holidays and frankly,I barely do that anymore.Gay New York….GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!

    I am still interested and looking forward to this club and famous djs and that real house music energy and atmosphere. Are they really not open yet? Weird… I understand what you are trying to say here but I do remember when Crobar was open and Victor Calderone would go on around 8 am and I’m a straight female, but the whole dance floor would fill up with gay men and it really never bothered me or anything. I still had so much fun and miss it. So i don’t see a problem here. What’s so horrible about straight nightlife…

      Great news: after months of cancelled parties and delayed opening, District 36 is in fact opening this coming weekend, on Saturday November 20.
      There first party features a line up of House and Techno DJ’s with Lee Burridge, Danny Howells and Sleepy & Boo on Saturday (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=175818689097067), followed by Richie Hatwin on Sunday. This is a “soft opening”, and capacity is limited to 500 patrons for Saturday, although we hear the club can hold more than twice as much.
      We’re not sure yet when Victor Calderone will settle into his new residency there. In the meantime, Victor will hold a big thanksgiving event in a massive loft in Long Island City on Friday, November 24.(http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=161736363861866)

      @Julie

      No offense but you are a str8 female,you dont know how it feels to be surrounded by obnoxious str8 (males) who would literally pushing into you and bitching and moaning about how “there are too many fags in here” or going “what are you looking at faggot”.You dont know what gay men go through everyday,so you cant get offended when one of us goes on a rant against str8 nightlife.And dont even get me started on the pathetic bottle service concept which takes place in practically EVERY str8 club in New York.Just because YOU may not have a problem with gays,doesnt mean that most other str8s wont.Besides,there are alot of str8 women who go to gay bars/clubs with their gay friends,so you wont see to many str8 women bitching about “too many fags in the club”,thats something that applies to insecure str8 guys with the IQ of a bag of shit along with their skanky girlfriends.Just sayin’.

      I can think of a few reasons why I wouldnt bother with str8 clubbin much.Homophobia and Bridge & Tunnel fist pumpers are 2 of those reasons.

      Besides,how do we know District 36 will run the same “gay friendly” policy as Crobar? Not just on Victor Calderone nights,but any given Friday/Saturday/Sunday night. Being “gay friendly” for one night,doesnt make a club desirable to many gay men in this naked city,just sayin’.

    And it figures.This joke of a club turned out to be just like every other “breeder” str8 club in manhattan.Im so OVER it
