The Eagle
554 W. 28th Street
New York, NY 10001
A Chelsea landmark establishment, the Eagle is the reference leather bar in New York, located in the western former industrial district. Its three floors are home to two bars, a specialty shop called "The Leather Man Store" selling all sorts of leather gears and accessories, a pool room, and an outdoor roof deck. This rooftop terrace is a very popular destination in the summertime, especially on Sunday evenings for the traditional Eagle Beer Blast. The terrace is packed with sexy guys of all shapes, colors and sizes, congregating to enjoy the view of the sunset over Manhattan, the freshly grilled hot dogs and hamburgers served at the barbecue, and the good company of other fine male specimens. Inside, the Eagle has a gritty and dark look and feel, with its massive concrete walls and metal fences, contributing to the underground and sleazy vibe of the place. On Saturdays, the cages that are installed throughout the club are put to good use when naked studs are locked-down in them for some wrestling play. The alternative queer-punk night takes place on Fridays with Buzzcock, featuring a rough mix of rock and ska tunes, an on duty barber to touch up the boys' hair-do, and a bootblack who'd probably be also willing to spit-shine some booty too.
This establishment is the favorite playground for New York's leather and S&M community, but anyone is really welcomed at the Eagle. It is not a sex club so there is no risk of getting caught up in some unexpected or unwanted sexual adventure, and the overall atmosphere is very laid back and casual. The crowd is friendly and attitude free, which is quite refreshing compared to other spots in the neighborhood.
