Shelter
150 Varick Street
New York, NY 10001
Carrying on the legacy of the Paradise Garage and the original New York downtown party network that gave birth to dance music culture, Shelter is an underground house music organized in by DJ Timmy Regisford for over 15 years.
Shelter is the quintessential New York house music club, and it is no coincidence that its current location on Varick Street is only a block away from the site of the legendary Paradise Garage.
The party exhibits all the traits that have defined New York’s early club scene: the space is a large, bare room, fully occupied by the dance floor; the utmost attention has been given to the sound system, crafting the perfect setup to create an all encompassing sensory experience; the crowd is definitely mixed with straights and gays, men and women, Blacks Whites, Latinos and Asians, all gathered for the love of house music and dance.
The party kicks-off late Saturday night, starts to get busy after 4 am and can last well into Sunday afternoon. The DJ spinning a true marathon sets can work the crowd into a frenzy, distilling infectious rhythms, soulful vocals, timeless classic grooves; blending a unique mix of house, funk, disco and soul that takes the revelers in an exhilarating journey of communal bonding and self expressivity.
Antipodean to the pompous, bottle service clubs that have taken over lower Manhattan, Shelter is a haven for down to earth music lovers. A rare alchemy takes place in that stripped venue, where the diversity of the people combined with the power of house music gives off an incredible vibe which is the key to the success and longevity of the party.
Despite keeping promotion to a minimum and catering to a discerning crowd of house music enthusiasts, Shelter has developed a tremendous influence in the dance music world, spearheading the soulful house music sound, and inspiring numerous DJ’s and producers.
The new home of Shelter in Soho is a two level venue. The main dance floor is equipped with a thunderous sound system which was previously designed for the Twilo nightclub, where it gained its reputation of one of the best in the club industry. The downstairs level is a lounge and bar where patron can chill out, relax and socialize.
The Shelter party takes place every Saturday night. It is not unusual that an early event takes place during the first part of the night, which then transitions into the real Shelter party later on. Other parties are also held in the venue on other nights, such as the black gay party Sprung on Thursdays.
