There’s nothing to bring relief to a sweltering summer day in New York like a getaway to the beach. But if you’re dreading the two hour trek to Fire Island, and don’t want to settle for the sometimes questionable water of Jacob Riis Park, you can still enjoy enjoy pristine white sand, swirling waves, and the always welcome company of sexy, frisky and sometimes completely naked studs by hopping on the ferry from Manhattan to Sandy Hook.

Sandy Hook is a narrow and deserted, 7-mile long sand barrier located at the northern tip of New Jersey. Formerly the site of various military operations, it is now a National Park, part of the Gateway National Recreation area, and provides miles of pristine beaches and luxuriant forest easily accessible from Manhattan via a short ferry ride.

The company Seastreak is operating ferries that leave from E. 35th street and Pier 11 next to the Southstreet Seaport and whisk you to Sandy Hook in about 30 minutes – which is perfect for the car-less Manhattanites. The modern, air conditioned ferry also boasts a full bar, so you can enjoy some early refreshments as you cruise around New York’s harbor, admiring the spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, and getting acquainted with other fellow day-trippers.

Gay boys will not feel out of their element for too long, and will easily recognize their peers as soon as they board the ferry. Once you arrive in Sandy Hook, hop on the shuttle and get off at Gunnison Beach (Parking Lot G). This section of Sandy Hook is one of the largest “clothing optional” beaches on the East Coast, and draws hordes of gay boys from New York and New Jersey.

Not only is this beach easily accessible form New York, but it is also very safe with lifeguards on duty and park rangers patrolling, and offer many amenities such as changing areas, showers and bathrooms and food vendors. Still, you’ll save money by bringing along your own cooler, so you can enjoy your drinks of choice. And since you are free to sunbath in your birthday suit, it’s only fitting that drinking alcohol on the beach is legal as well.
