Splash
Review
A landmark of the Chelsea bar scene opened in 1992, Splash epitomizes the contemporary gay club experience. Always filled with hot guys and ultra buff go-go dancers, Splash biggest names DJ’s from the dance music circuit and live performers, Splash has set the standard for numerous other venues around the world.
The main room fits two large bars, a dance floor and a stage which hosts various live shows, including the infamous bathroom show in which a bevy of chiseled muscle hunks invades the stage to take a nice and steamy shower, or frolic under the running water. The lower level features several lounge spaces and another large bar.
The place is large and always packed with a diverse and ever changing crowd of Chelsea boys and tourists drawn by the various theme parties organized through the week.
Tuesday is home to Ocean, a sexy, “all inclusive” party featuring gorgeous black and Latino go-go studs and a mix of hip-hop, house and reggaeton.
“Campus Thursdays” is the party for all the college boys and gay kids fresh off the bus, lured into to Splash by the promise of cheap booze and butt naked go-go twinks. Expect a wild “frat house” atmosphere, cheap shots and Extra Large long island iced teas to help break the remaining inhibitions. The climax of the night happens when a bunch of sexy pseudo-frat boys take the stage for a collective shower, materializing for a fleeting moment our dirtiest fantasies of locker room voyeurism.
Friday nights, Splash is home to “Full Frontal Fridays”, organized by the legendary promoter Mark Nelson. The club is once again filled with an army of go-go-boys that keep the crowd of grade-A beefy boys entertained. This night also features various performances, ranging from dance divas singing their latest circuit hits to porn stars doing strip shows and promoting their latest piece of work. The best DJs of the dance music scene take turns behind the club’s turntables, and Frankie Knuckles or Susan Morabito have their New York residency at Splash.
In the same testosterone heavy vein, Saturdays are Men’s Night, a party promoted by former porn stud Aaron Tanner that promises a very butch and manly vibe, with loads of kinky shows and the finest specimens of Chelsea boys in attendance.
