Mr Black is closed again…

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

The dance floor at Mr Black in New YorkIt is with a heavy heart that I’m moving Mr Black to the cemetery that is my “places closed” section. After last week’s abrupt cancellation of the Tubway party, Stuart Black announced last Friday the club was returning to an indefinite period of hybernation.

It’s really too bad – as until last summer, Mr Black seemed to have settled at club Rebel and had grown to become the prime center of attraction on New York’s gay club scene. Then, against all expectations, Mr Black moved out of Rebel for a short lived stint at Room Service, before ending up at its last location at 199 Bowery Street. It sounded like this would be the final home of Mr Black, but that too didn’t work out.

Club Amnesia to open in New York at 609 W. 29th street

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

The dance floor of club Sol, now club Amnesia in New York. After a long period of drought, there’s a glimmer of hope that things are bout to be shaken up in New York’s clubland.
Club Amnesia is set to open at the end of the year, at the former location of club Sol, at 609 W. 29th street, between 10th and 11th avenue.

Club Sol was a superb venue which unfortunately never really took off. It had the class of a mega club, but the promoters tried to make it into a cheap bottle service kind of establishment, and it really didn’t go anywhere. Junior Vasquez has used on a few occasions to throw some pretty good events, in 2007.

House, Techno and Trance clubs in New York – where’s the party?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Ambulance in front of the nightclub Crobar on a monday morning in New YorkNew York’s gay club scene has changed radically in the past 3 years or so. The era of mega clubs, marathon parties, and afterhours that last into Sunday afternoon is pretty much over. The demise of Crobar, followed by the closing of the Roxy in March 2007 were the nails in the coffin of a form of entertainment that has defined New York City since the mid 70’s.  And we’ve recently learned that after sitting unused for 2 years, the church that was once known as the legendary Limelight is about to be reborn as an upscale shopping mall in time for the holiday season…

Divine Gina Gospel

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Gina Devine at EscuelitaWe’re sad to hear of the passing of drag performer and longtime member of the Escuelita family Gina Divine (aka Gina Gospel). We didn’t know her personally, but we have always been fascinated by her regular appearances at Harmonica Sunbeam’s long running Sunday evening tea dance. Behind her over the top personality and runway antics lied a big heart. She would often pop out of the woodwork just as Harmonica Sunbeam was closing the show, and challenge the diva on her own runway, inevitably leading to a fierce showdown. The dynamic between the two girls was nothing short of fascinating and their improvised confrontations were always precious demonstrations in the art of throwing shade and cuntiness.

HX Magazine is sold and the New York Blade ceases publication

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Covers of past issues of HX Magazine, New York's long running gay magazine. In an official statement published on the New York Press website, Mathew Bank founder of HX, confirmed that the magazine had been sold to an undisclosed buyer.

The long running free publication has been covering New York’s gay night life and club scene since 1991. It evolved from a black and white newsletter distributed by Mathew Bank into a glossy and voluminous weekly publication, featuring the highly anticipated gossip column Homo Dish, a tasteful selection of photos from the past week’s parties in the “Seen” pages, and the many pages of gentlemen advertising their services with colorful accompanying pictures.

A guide to New York’s Black and Latino gay scene

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

A Sexy Gogo Dancer on the bar at HK LoungeA few weeks ago, we were asked by the French magazine babyboy to give them some tips on New York’s “ethnic” gay scene (that’s a French way of referring to the black, Latino, Arab, Caribbean communities) for a report they were preparing. Far from claiming to be an expert in the field, various circumstances have led us to be reasonably acquainted on that subject matter, and I happily shared my thoughts, which are reprinted below, translated in English for my readers. The demise of Mansion and the return of Alegria to the old Crobar space

View of the main dance floor at Crobar for Victor's Evolve Party

The dire economic recession which started in New York city with the downfall of several financial institutions has nonetheless brought a pleasant wind of change over the city’s night world.

As legions of jobless finance workers were sent packing back to wherever they had come from, the multitude of bottle service clubs and other tasteless exclusive establishment which had been sucking the life out of New York’s club scene for the past few years have began to fall into bankruptcy.

The latest causality is none other than Mansion, the short lived incarnation of the fancy clubbing brand for jet setter born out of Miami which had set residency in the space formerly known as Crobar, a landmark New York mega-club that closed its door in 2007. Club kids, house heads and gay boys will now be welcomed again in the new incarnation of the W. 28th street club, and the rumor has it that Alegria parties will in fact move back to the venue where it enjoyed its most successful years.
