Club Amnesia to open in New York at 609 W. 29th street
After a long period of drought, there’s a glimmer of hope that things are bout to be shaken up in New York’s clubland.
Club Amnesia is set to open at the end of the year, at the former location of club Sol, at 609 W. 29th street, between 10th and 11th avenue.
Club Sol was a superb venue which unfortunately never really took off. It had the class of a mega club, but the promoters tried to make it into a cheap bottle service kind of establishment, and it really didn’t go anywhere. Junior Vasquez has used on a few occasions to throw some pretty good events, in 2007.
The venue was large, equipped with an impressive light show and video system, and had a high glass ceiling ornamented with track lights which gave it a look of an airport runway from which aircraft would take off (very appropriate metaphor for a Junior Vasquez party…).
At any rate, the new club has thankfully moved away from the cheesy “models and bottles” parties that the former Sol nightclub used to host. On December 4, the collective BasicNYC is throwing a techno event, but the official opening party is set for December 31.
Hopefully gay promoters will soon take notice and manage to organize some dance music oriented events in that space because it definitely has a great potential.
My question is, can u have a birthday party and how much ?
The real question that should be asked is:
When is Amnesia or even M2 gonna start hosting weekly gay house nights? We havent had a full swing gay saturday night house night in this city in almost 2 years.Being that its we are moving into 2010 and staring a new decade,I would really like to see gay new york nightlife improve and move in a different direction.
I meant to type Starting* in my above comment, sorry bout that
It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen soon, unfortunately. Club 57 has manage to establish itself as the favorite Saturday night destination. The kids like their 3-level club with different music in each room. The big room gay club experience is definitely something of the past.
However, I’ve heard that nowadays, the boys all flock to Pacha after 4 AM for after hours. Something to check out… if you can stay awake until that time.
I hope it doesnt stay this way.I mean,Club 57 is alright, but frankly the only thing Ive found myself enjoying there is the music on the main floor and the open bar from 10-11pm.Now to break it down alittle bit, when I walk into Providence (Club 57) I dont feel a New York City club vibe.To elaborate, the Triumph room feels like a big bar with a small dancefloor, the music is decent, but its not what Id care to listen to all night long.Good music is played in the main room but,has a weak sound system (in fact its so weak,I dunno if its even appropriate to call it a sound system) The lighting is kinda cheap and there is no clubber and DJ interaction because the “DJ Booth” is so high up,you cant even see him.The dancefloor is not much to get excited about, because its kinda small and you wind up dancing on tiles when the place gets crowded.I hate to rain on anyone’s parade but if Im gonna have to pay $15+ to enter an establishment,I expect better.I still go to club 57 every once and a while, but I dont frequent it the way I would a “real club”.As for Pacha,I never go during afterhours because they charge like $40-$50 to get after 4am and I heard Pacha goes…I think its 18+ around 4am? I could be wrong there.I signed up for Pacha’s mailing list so I get emails from them like every week.I usually go on Saturdays but lately Ive been hitting them up on Fridays too.I go to Pacha quite often, but I usualy get there early to make their “Free b4 midnight” or Reduced $10 b4 midnight.Though Pacha is a “str8″ club,I find myself there almost every week because of the good music, the fact that it is a real club, and you get the New York City club vibe and the club is,overall a really cool place.Sometimes I head down to Cielo or Santos. In the meantime I always wait for Peter Rauhofer’s next WORK! parties, and I always attend.Hopefully in the near future things get better, this New York City for F**K sake, options people…options! Maybe its just that the kids dont know how to party nowadays but Ive been going out for quite some time and I have different expectations for NYC.As for right now,Ill continue to be flexible and do what Ive been doing.
I forgot to mention this one though,I wouldnt necessarily say that club 57 established itself as the favorite Saturday night destination because technically,it is the ONLY gay dance event taking place on Saturday night. Now had there been 1 other or maybe 2 other gay dance parties taking place on Saturdays then it might be possible for club 57 to gain that status. In reality, there still isnt a dance party dominating Saturdays.Being that club 57 has no competition it cant be a favorite.Think back to when Peter launched WORK! @ Stereo and John Blair was hosting Avalon Saturdays,Peter’s party overtook Blair’s and it wound up dominating Saturday nights until Peter and his crew were forced to vacate due to the demolition of Stereo/Octagon.As I said before,Im waiting for something more extravagant to happen in gay nightlife. In the meantime,I will continue to adapt as Ive stated in my above comment.
Sorry queen of new york. With all due respect you are wrong about the big gay dance club being a thing of the past. We young guys are ready for it. Funny how the Alegria party is always pact at m2 lounge. And work with peter rauauffer
I meant queenofnewyork. Also Club 57 is sucks!!!! and chris is right it does not have that nyc vibe.

To follow up on Jett’s comment. Its true about Alegria and Peter Rauhofer’s WORK! Im sure you’ve attended both Alegria and WORK! so you probably know what we are talking about in terms of both parties being packed all the time.Big clubs will always be essential to gay New York nightlife. They definitely aint a thing of the past.In fact I feel its anticipated by many,to have a big Saturday night dance floor.I remember when a rumor was swimming around about Roxy’s possible resurrection there were alot of people who wanted to see it come back.Just because there is a small number of queens out there who dont like big clubs doesnt mean that we ALL should have to suffer without a big club. Many of us still want to have a Dance night on Saturdays. There are still people wondering whether or not if Peter’s party WORK! will ever go weekly again.Just because Roxy isnt around anymore doesnt mean it is the end of the big club era.It maybe the end of Roxy, but it doesnt mean its the end of the big club era.Roxy was just one club and frankly, considering the direction Roxy was being pushed in,it was probably best for it to close down at the time. The club’s management wasnt putting the necessary effort into keeping Roxy a destination. So the number of patrons was declining. There is still a large number of gays who want a large dance party.Thats why Alegria and WORK! get the large crowds. The problem is promoters have gotten lazy and they dont wanna work,so the best that can be offered, isnt being offered right now.I personally wish Peter Rauhofer’s WORK! would go weekly again,in my honest opinion it is the BEST gay party the city has seen in a long time. And when you think about it,club 57 is LAME LAME LAME! Dont get me wrong, its nice that the guys behind club 57 are trying but,it doesnt give my soul the energy it needs.Im sure Im not the only one who feels that way.Frankly after going to both Rock it and Club 57 several times,Ive concluded that they are both the same party. The obvious difference is that club 57 is on Saturdays and is just a slightly scaled up version of Rock it.Im sure there are many people out there hungry for something bigger and better.Hopefully 2010 has something interesting coming.
You guys should try 57 again. They have an entirely new sound system and light show… it has much more of a big club feel now I think. I went last week and left with my ears ringing. Sure its not Roxy, but most would say its the hottest party in the city right now.
@ Brett
Thanks but if you read my comments above, you’d see that I dont find anything thrilling about a restaurant converted nightclub.I will stick with Pacha,Cielo,Santos,M2,WORK!,and bar hoppin’ for now.Im not looking for what I had at Roxy, but I am looking for something BETTER.Club 57 doesnt feed my soul the juices it needs on a Saturday night
Chris is 100percent right!!! Club 57 is the same way i feel about Splash. No way will i go and spend my Saturday night there with my Friends. And who cares about. Roxy. It was on it’s last leg towards the end. I don’t like compareing my city to another but London is it for Dance Music. Great clubs and cool Kidds. Something NY is missing and i say this with Envey. Dam!!! that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Soon there will be a place for us Cool Kidds.
Where the gay crowd go nowon Sat nite?
@ Kim
Lawd only knows
yes, it seems homosexuals in nyc have such amazingly bad taste in dance music nowadays, when i am there i prefer to go to straight events. seems you don’t get the cosmic disco/balearic/disco-edit vibe at all. no deep house either—which is odd because where do you think that sound originated.
ps: peter rauhoffer, and junior vasquez suck!!!!!!!
this is music for tacky meth addicts.
To the circuit queen..something hater above: I normally wouldnt dignify such rude obnoxious sophomoric comments with a resposne, however today I will make this one exception. If you hate the gay new york dance scene as much as you rudely stated, then how about doing us all a favor and stay OUT of new york, the less negative queens and heteros we have in the NYC gay dance scene, the better off it will be in the end.Secondly, from the way you articulated that comment, its obvious that you are just another irrelevant tourist. Therefore,I will inform you, that your comment and opinion has no more relevancy and value than what any str8 person local/non-local or homo tourist has to say about gay life in NYC.In the end, nobody is holding a pistol to your head and forcing to come to NYC,so if you wanna be a hater, hate yourself for coming to NYC.Unless you are an attention whore and need the gratification of whining about a city, you dont even live in.Also, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about Peter Rauhofer, but hes dedicated alot of time and compassion into his career and because of that, hes known all over the world and is owner of the successful and still growing star 69 records (which by the way is NOT a circuit queen record label) which he started in 1999.But since you think you know everything about the gay dance music scene in NYC you probably knew that…right?
Well he is known all over the world amongst homosexuals who’s idea of a quality experience is smoking meth and bum-holing each other without condoms at some lame-o circuit party in a hotel in Palm Springs. Oh—and don’t forget to wear white.
Anyone who would feature the highly naff Offer Nissim, or Suzanne Palmer on their website will rarely scratch below the surface of the inane. I wonder when Junior is coming out with his new 25 min. long Celine Dion mega-mix? Oh, and Dance music and it’s culture go a bit farther back than 1999.
P.S.: Skill testing question—Do you wear Abercrombie, pluck your eyebrows, and/or have a tribal tattoo?
Channeling Sophia Lamar?
Well either her, or the guy from Hercules and Love Affair.
I apologize for the possible off-topic. Guys, could you inform me which web hosting company you are using right now I have a problem because my current web hosting company hostrator.com is kicking me off. They say that our website is using too many server resources. But our website only gets 300 visitors per day.. Anyway, what would be your recommendations? Are you happy with your web hosting providers? I am checking LCN at the moment, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space? I have contacted them and they say something like “1000GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will start running out of disk space we will simply add a new 2000GB drive so can continue uploading..”. What do you think about it? Any ideas and web hosting company name suggestions are much appreciated.
I’ve been using Lunarpages for 4 years and I am very happy with their level of service.
