It is with a heavy heart that I’m moving Mr Black to the cemetery that is my “places closed” section. After last week’s abrupt cancellation of the Tubway party, Stuart Black announced last Friday the club was returning to an indefinite period of hybernation.

It’s really too bad – as until last summer, Mr Black seemed to have settled at club Rebel and had grown to become the prime center of attraction on New York’s gay club scene. Then, against all expectations, Mr Black moved out of Rebel for a short lived stint at Room Service, before ending up at its last location at 199 Bowery Street. It sounded like this would be the final home of Mr Black, but that too didn’t work out.

Clubgoers can only cope with so much disruption, and as Mr Black was continuing this unfortunate game of musical chairs, losing more of its following at every turn, some new parties were getting established and catching the attention of the thrill seeking masses.

Truth be told, we hadn’t stepped foot back into Mr Black since it moved to RoomService, but we still cherished the thought that somewhere in this city, the raucous bunch from the House of Black was still doing its things and shaking things up. Alas, this thought will have to be put to rest, until Mr Black comes out of hybernation, but from the sound of Stuart Black’s email – we shouldn’t expect this to happen too soon.

Below is the official announcement of the closing of Mr Black, sent by Stuart Black:

To all the peeps,

2009 has been a chaotic year for mr.Black, a year of impossible challenges, (we moved twice )and yet a period of successful national growth has happened at the same time.
It is unfortunate that i must announce that here in NYC/Manhattan mr.Black will be taking a break for the unforeseeable future.

Irreconcilable differences between mr.Black and the current venue that houses us has led to my decision. I look forward to the next few months of withholding mr.Black as a venue and take this opportunity to experiment and lay the the foundations for something even stronger than has been seen in the past.
Please take note that there is no time period for mr.Black’s return or in what incarnation it will return as. Since our first return from exile in June 2008 we have constantly struggled in maintaining the quality of what we provide to patrons and trying to balance that with the conflicting operational practices of those venues that have been nice enough to house us. Therefore mr.Black’s return as a venue will never happen if we do not control all aspects of the clubhouse as it was at the original mr BLACK which was a teeming success!
The house of Black must run mr.Black period. This is not an easy task, finding the right space may take me months or years but at this point i refuse to compromise on what we want to provide to the world. We now will fly solo no matter how long it takes to secure this Independence.
Big shout out to all the staff, djs and hosts who have persevered throughout this period, strong bunch of bitches you all are.
Please note all other mr.black adventures in L.A, Brooklyn and stateside will continue as planned, and we are super excited with what lays ahead for the future.

Sloppy kisses, Stuart Black.
